Tracking the energy transition on Australia's National Electricity Market
of the NEM's electricity came from renewables (wind, solar including rooftop, and hydro) in the 12 months to 3 Nov 2026, up from 21% in the year to June 2019. Coal supplied 51%, and gas and other 4%.

Cross-check against AEMO

|---|---|---|
| Q3 2024 | 38.3% | 39.3% |
| Q4 2024 | 45.0% | about 46% |

Limitations
- Mine runs 1 to 1.5 points below AEMO, probably because small non-scheduled generation is not counted. Not confirmed.
- Rooftop solar is an AEMO estimate. I use only its
MEASUREMENTseries; I have not checked which series AEMO prefers. - “Gas and other” includes the under 1% of generation from units I could not map to a fuel.
Data sources
AEMO’s NEMweb, July 2018 to now, five mainland NEM regions: unit-level output (SCADA), AEMO’s rooftop solar estimate, and the generator registration list for fuel types.
Renewables are wind, utility and rooftop solar, and conventional hydro. Pumped storage and batteries are excluded. Share is renewables divided by scheduled and semi-scheduled generation plus rooftop.
